Berkeley is often one of the favourites in the PYO field for the sweetness and size of the fruit. The large, light blue berries are firm and sweet and are produced in loose clusters that are easy to pick. It is a mid to late season variety, so the fruit will normally ripen from late July into August in southern England. They are vigorous plants with strong, widely spaced branches that can grow tall with a somewhat open and slightly spreading habit. Once established, Berkeley needs good pruning to keep the plant under control (be brave with the secateurs!) and plaenty of space in which to grow.
