Blueberry Varieties
The blueberry plants that we grow are all varieties
of the North American Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum).
The named varieties differ primarily in the ripening period of the
fruit, but also in fruit size colour and flavour. All varieties
produce white, bell-like flowers in spring - the flowering times
coinciding so that any one variety may be used to cross-pollinate
another - followed by a heavy crop of fruit in mid-summer. In the
south of England the earliest ripening varieties are typically ready
by mid-July, with the late varieties beginning to crop towards the end
of August. The berries ripen over a period of about six weeks on each
bush, so there will be a peak season when fruit is being picked off
all varieties. Growing at least two different varieties, each in its
own pot, ensures full pollination.
The varieties that we
usually have available are listed below in order of ripening, Duke
being the earliest and Brigitta the latest. (Please note that at any
one time we may be out of stock of a particular variety in one or more
of the plant sizes - you can check the online availability in the
detailed catalogue listings)
